Day 5 across upper Michigan

Today, Saturday, Sept 6 (Our 46th wedding anniversary!) we continued our road trip, leaving the village of Ironwood, Michigan and heading east down US 2. This highway continues to bring delightful views of the woods of northern Michigan and its many lakes, streams and rivers, much like Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Traffic was light, even through the several small towns and villages along Route 2; places like Iron River and Iron Mountain, denoting a history of iron ore mining operations. The sky was again overcast with mists of light rain falling from time to time.

We were able to stop and do some needed shopping in Escanaba, situated on the northern shore of Lake Michigan, about 100 miles north of Green Bay. We continued east on US 2, finally getting a room at a hotel on the north shore in the city of Manistique. We had a room with a view of Lake Michigan. Very nice! I can see the white caps as they hit the beach, right from our hotel window as I type this. We stopped early so that we could do laundry and re-pack our things in preparation for our arrival at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island, some 90 miles east, tomorrow.

We arrived in time to watch the last half of the football game between BYU and Washington. What a crazy ending to a great game! BYU came away with a 28-27 win, helped by a disasterous penalty against Washington in the final seconds which backed them up on their extra point and gave BYU an opportunity for a block of the kick. Oh, my!
